Any system of modernity, when it underserves humanity, is destined for a colossal failure. We are evaluating the sustainability of systems based on broad principles that sustain life. Principles must be easily comprehensible by humanity for any system to be adopted and accepted. It cannot be an esoteric doctrine understood by few economists. Fundamental concepts of an economic system cannot rest on short-term trends and assessment because the beneficiary is the human race. Human race existed far back than what we perceive today and will last far into the future than what can be imagined. We are not a fashionable trend.
Our life rests on molding human behavior responsibly. We have responsibilities. Governance has responsibility. Industry has responsibility. When humans function responsibly, nature showers benevolence in an unharmful way. Nature’s benevolence should not turn into a curse as evidenced by the floods in Pakistan. We see natural catastrophes through the lens of weather records. Weather records are not useful to understand nature. It distracts our responsibility toward nature, and we see it as a rare event. Rare events do not make us responsible. Responsibility must be nurtured in humanity. Culture, tradition, and religion are the most efficient, and economical tools at our disposal to teach human responsibility toward self, and to the external world. Modern times is denigrating ancestral wisdom to receive benefit today. Today is a temporary phenomenon, many tomorrows are in store for us, and nature. Our mind must be, forever, focused on yet unseen time.
The economic theories do not account for responsibility. If it did, we would not have an irresponsible industry, and governance. Responsibility cannot be quantified. It is an intangible tangible entity of life; tangible to our minds, intangible to senses. From complex cosmos to a tiny molecule displays intangible tangible quality. Palpable is momentary; impalpable is vast. Living is a palpable moment; life is impalpably vast. Economy is attempting to quantify the vastness of life; it is akin to quantifying the water in the oceans. Why have we become captive to economic activity, and ride the roller coaster of economic data? Absurd that an insentient field of study has assumed sentient characteristics and we see ourselves optimistically with economic performance. It makes us, especially the urban population, feel good when we hear ‘economy is doing well.’ Is the economy a sentient being to do well?
Life rests on a system of dependence. We depend on the Sun rising every day. It is unconditional in our minds that we expect dawning of the day, Sunset, and nightfall like they are our slaves. Sun is not the only object exhibiting rhythm, every species displays a certain rhythm in life. Life is rhythmic. However, we live without a thought behind the beautiful rhythm of a day on Earth. Our existence is rhythmless. We hurriedly dash to work at the crack of the day because our rhythm is set to an employer’s command. Just as we have abandoned thoughts on the rhythmic life of our Earth, we have vacated reflections on mundane matters as well to witness an inversion of values on our own life’s essentials. Future generations will not look upon us with kindness. We are a superior race on Earth. We do not know how to live with supreme values because human values are stolen from us and replaced with economic data.
Humanity is manipulated with economic data. Humanity must discover that the economy does not exist without us. Humanity can usurp all the economic parameters in a flash. A superior race exists in data form to an economist, and decision makers at the highest position! How much lower can humanity descend? We are commoditized by economists. Does the economic field of study exist to improve, or does it exist to devalue the human condition is a question that should permeate our minds. Economic theories have succeeded in creating imaginary wealth with inversion of economic values. All the wealth created by modern times can be wiped out with one catastrophic event that nature has in her capacity to deliver. Economy and markets always exist on edge. There is never a balance. It has never reached an equilibrium to serve humanity. It is a rhythmless, and lifeless system subjecting the human race to abominable conditions.
Humanity must exercise their responsibility to change perverse aspects of our existence. Are the well to do in our society unaware of pillars of modern society? We are walking on the backs of children who toil to provide wealthy nations with comforts so they can eat a single meal. Is this the value we give to our own race? We have forgotten the cost of introducing Asbestos, DDT, and other chemicals into our environment, and the subsequent cleanup efforts of our misadventures. The Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal, India reverberates even today with many thousands suffering, and children born with incurable diseases even after 40 plus years. Are we not aware that our existence, at best, can last a century? However, the products we use last several million years. Million years is countless generations of human population, and animal species destined to suffer due to excesses of modernity. Has our education, and economic existential systems lost sight of the intelligence of nature even after seeing the sight of floating debris in the oceans. Nature will not clean up our mess. We are responsible for our mess. Nature will deliver punishment to the creators of products that are not decomposable. Do the economic theorists have a methodology to incorporate intangible costs, or are they merry about an imaginary wealth of today of a few?Data driven decision making is disastrous for humanity. It is an unkind, and inhumane system of seeing organic life. Life system delivers richness to billions of humans, and trillions of animals. Economics is a lifeless system introduced into an organic, and rhythmic system. Humanity should not anticipate a lifeless system to come to life to serve our needs. Our needs are met by a superior system rooted in ancestry. We need to relearn our values in life. We must discover responsibility. We need to be alert to nature’s responsibility, and it can upend our best made plans in a hurry. Nature is our only source of value. We can live without modernity because it is an irresponsible growth of human ignorance. Intelligence is responsibility toward everything that surrounds us is ancestral wisdom. We should position ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren for a shift in values. Nature responding with droughts, heat, floods, and other disasters is a clarion call for humanity. It is kind when we are responsible; unkind when we are irresponsible. We need to reflect upon ourselves to prepare for transition to a post-modern world.
